CIHI's 2025 data paints a stark picture for Manitoba. Only 31% of knee replacement surgeries met the national 26-week benchmark between April and September 2025 — twice as bad as the national average of 63%. One in ten Manitoba knee replacement patients waited over 18 months for surgery. Only Prince Edward Island performed worse. Manitoba also struggled with hip replacement (47% within benchmark) and cataract surgery (55% within benchmark).
Private Surgery Options in Manitoba
Manitoba has very limited private surgical options compared to larger provinces. Some patients travel to other provinces (Ontario or Quebec) for private surgery, adding interprovincial travel costs to already significant surgical fees. Manitoba's separate Fertility Treatment Tax Credit provides some financial support for IVF but doesn't address the broader surgical wait crisis.

For a province with one of the highest obesity rates in the country, this creates a devastating cycle: patients who qualify for life-changing weight loss surgery wait over half a decade while their obesity-related comorbidities (diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, joint deterioration) continue to worsen. Manitoba recently announced capacity for 200 additional hip and knee replacements per year, but this addresses a fraction of the backlog.
