In April 2026, WestJet launched its first South American nonstop connection: Toronto to Medellín, four times per week on Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. This is significant for Canadian medical tourism patients because Medellín is Colombia's second-largest medical tourism hub, home to internationally accredited hospitals and a well-established recovery infrastructure.

Previously, reaching Medellín from Canada required a connection through Bogotá or a US gateway city. The new direct route cuts travel time and adds competition that should help keep fares affordable on the corridor.

Tips for Medical Travel Flights

• Book a flexible ticket. Medical timelines can shift. Many airlines offer date-change options for a modest fee — worth it when your surgery date might move by a few days after pre-op consultation.
• Choose an aisle seat. After surgery, you'll want easy access to move, stretch, and use the restroom — especially for orthopaedic and abdominal procedures. Compression socks reduce DVT risk on any flight over 4 hours.
• Bring your medical records in carry-on. Never check your pre-op imaging, lab results, or surgical records. Keep digital copies on your phone and a USB drive as backup.
• Consider booking open-jaw. If your surgery is in Bogotá and you'll recover in Medellín (or vice versa), booking Toronto→Bogotá and Medellín→Toronto avoids a domestic flight and adds flexibility.
• No visa required. Canadian citizens receive 90 days visa-free entry to Colombia — more than enough for any medical trip. Bring your passport (valid 6+ months) and proof of return travel.
• Cheapest months to fly: September–November and April–May typically offer the lowest fares. December–January and June–July are peak pricing.

Airport-to-Hospital Logistics

Both Bogotá's El Dorado International Airport and Medellín's José María Córdova International Airport are well-connected to their cities' major hospital districts. Many Colombian hospitals and medical tourism facilitators offer airport transfer services — either included in the medical package or for a modest additional fee.

Bogotá's major hospitals (Fundación Santa Fe, Clínica del Country) are located in the northern part of the city, approximately 30–45 minutes from the airport depending on traffic. Medellín's main medical facilities (Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe, Clínica Las Américas) are 45–60 minutes from the airport, which sits in the Rionegro area outside the city.

Ride-hailing apps (Uber, InDrive, DiDi) work reliably in both cities and are significantly cheaper than taxis. Airport taxi rates are posted and regulated.
