The province has invested in expanding surgical capacity, including new operating rooms and extended hours, but demand continues to outpace supply. BC's MRI wait is a particular bottleneck — at 18+ weeks nationally, diagnostic imaging delays add significantly to the total patient journey.
Private Surgery Options in British Columbia
BC has a more established private surgery sector than most provinces. Private knee and hip replacement is available at $24,000–$36,000 CAD through accredited facilities. The Cambie Surgery Centre in Vancouver has been a high-profile private option, though its scope is narrower than some patients expect. Private cataract surgery runs $3,000–$5,000 per eye. BC's IVF program (launched July 2025) funds one cycle but clinic waits remain significant.
MSP Coverage for Surgery Abroad
MSP Out-of-Country Policy
BC's Medical Services Plan covers emergency physician services outside Canada at BC rates. Hospital services are not covered outside Canada. For planned surgery abroad, prior approval from MSP is mandatory — a BC specialist must complete an Out-of-Country Health Services Funding Application before travel. If approved, MSP covers at BC rates only. Emergency hospital coverage outside Canada is limited to approximately $75/day. Travel, accommodation, and non-physician services are never covered.
The Colombia Alternative for British Columbia Patients
BC launched its Publicly Funded IVF Program on July 2, 2025, joining Ontario and Quebec in covering one IVF cycle for eligible residents. The program includes medication coverage (income-based) — a significant benefit given that IVF medications alone cost $3,000–$7,000 per cycle. However, as a new program, clinic capacity is still ramping up and waits are developing. BC's proximity to the US border also gives residents access to Washington state private surgery options, though at US pricing.
