"Best rehab abroad" searches are usually looking for a country ranking. The more useful question is how to vet an individual program — since accreditation, staffing ratios, and aftercare planning vary enormously between facilities within any single country.
A program's accreditation and staff-to-patient ratio predict outcomes far more reliably than its country or its marketing photos. Ask for both directly, in writing.
What to actually verify before choosing a program
- Accreditation. Ask which accrediting body has certified the facility, and verify independently — don't rely solely on a badge displayed on the program's website.
- Staff-to-patient ratio and clinical staff credentials. Ask specifically about the credentials of clinical staff (not just support staff), and the ratio during both daytime and overnight hours.
- Medical detox protocol. If detox is part of the program, confirm on-site medical supervision specifically, not just "medical staff available."
- Aftercare and discharge planning. Ask what happens after you return home — whether the program coordinates with providers in your home country, or whether aftercare planning ends at discharge.
- Family communication policy. Confirm how and how often the program communicates with family, and get this in writing before travel.

Questions to ask any program directly
- What accrediting body certifies this facility, and can I verify that independently?
- What is the staff-to-patient ratio, including overnight hours?
- Is medical detox supervised on-site by licensed medical staff?
- What does aftercare planning look like once I return home?
- How and how often will you communicate with my family during treatment?
Why this matters more abroad than at home
Rehab programs abroad are harder to visit in person before committing, and regulatory oversight of addiction treatment facilities varies significantly by country. That combination makes independent verification of accreditation and staffing more important, not less, than it would be for a program closer to home.
